Since Israel started to strike the Gaza Strip in 2023, the whole world started to get angry at the country, whether governments or civilians. And this anger is getting bigger every day as the people see the videos and the news of Israel killing children, bombing schools, striking hospitals, and so on. We aren’t going into this as their war crimes can’t be counted”.
In Egypt, things got smarter. Egyptians decided to boycott Israeli supporting brands, brands that support killing their brothers in the Gaza Strip. The brands involved were global brands that everyone knows, like Nescafé, Persil, and McDonald’s, and unfortunately, people in Egypt were depending on even more global brands for years.
After the people of Egypt took that decision, they started to look for local alternatives, and fortunately, they were able to find many brands that they didn’t even notice were as good as these global brands and way cheaper, which helped the Egyptian boycott. An example of this was an instant coffee brand that costs around 130 EGP for the 200gm jar, while Nescafé costs around 200 EGP for the same amount in 2023.
The boycott of Israeli supporting brands move allowed local products to rise, and people started to notice it even more. Although there are no statistics on this, as it just started a few days ago but the people’s feedback on social media is very impressive, and they have been promoting the local products through user-generated content for days.
As a result of this, when I went shopping in a hypermarket, I found shelves full of products that people are boycotting, while the shelves of local products were getting empty. They even restocked some products while I was there. This indicates the success of the Egyptian boycott.
at the end whether you support the palestinian case or not, you should definitely start to have a look at the local brands at you country that are as good as the imported products and give them a chance to support them.
