In his latest YouTube video, Dr. Ehab Mosallam tackled one of the most frequently asked questions in the business world, which is how service marketing differs from marketing a product.
While both share core principles, Dr. Ehab explained that services present unique challenges that require tailored strategies.
Understanding Services Versus Products
Dr. Ehab clarified that the difference lies not in the industry but in the type of offering, whether tangible, like a computer or clothing, or intangible, like medical consultations, training sessions, or software subscriptions. He further outlined the three main market structures, B2C, B2B, and B2B2C, stressing that effective marketing demands recognizing the distinct nature of services.
Key Challenges in Service Marketing
Unlike products, services involve no transfer of ownership, raising issues around refunds and intellectual property. Services are also intangible, making it harder for customers to assess quality before purchase. Dr. Ehab noted that businesses must provide tangible cues, such as staff professionalism, workplace atmosphere, and strong visual identity, to inspire trust.
Another challenge is perishability, where unutilized services, such as empty hotel rooms or unbooked appointments, translate to lost revenue. To counter this, he suggested better demand forecasting and flexible scheduling.
He also highlighted that services are produced and consumed simultaneously, leaving no room for error, and often vary in quality depending on the provider or occasion.
To address this, organizations must invest in recruitment, training, and consistent monitoring to ensure reliable customer experiences.
Branding and Customer Relations
Dr. Ehab emphasized the vital role of branding in service industries, advising businesses to build corporate brands rather than relying solely on individual reputations.
Over-dependence on personal branding, he warned, can make scalability difficult if customers refuse substitutes.
