Opel, the German vehicle manufacturer, has officially announced the selection of Algeria as the site for its first production facility outside the European continent in a strategic decision, confirmed by Opel CEO Florian Huettl, that signals a major expansion for the Stellantis subsidiary into the Middle East and Africa market, and underscores Algeria’s rising status as a key industrial hub where the brand aims to deliver German engineering standards through local labor.
The project follows two years of intensive evaluation and deepening partnerships between the German brand and Algerian authorities, resulting in a production unit designed specifically to meet the growing demands of Algerian consumers while serving as a vital complement to Opel’s existing European manufacturing network.
During a recent working session in Algiers, Opel CEO Florian Huettl and Samir Cherfane, Chief Operating Officer for Stellantis MEA, finalized plans for the site and discussed the integration of additional models into the local ecosystem to ensure the project contributes effectively to national industrial growth.
Industry sources indicate that this facility represents a direct investment by the Opel brand itself, distinguishing it from the Tafraoui plant, which was a broader Stellantis group project for the Fiat brand involving over 200 million euros.
By investing directly, Opel aims to establish a more tailored industrial presence that adheres to the “made in the region, for the region” principle, which is expected to foster a robust local supplier network and create sustainable value for both the domestic market and the wider African continent.
The Algerian automotive sector has seen a significant revival recently, driven by government incentives and new regulatory frameworks designed to transition the country from a consumer market to an export-oriented production platform. The arrival of Opel, alongside existing players like Fiat, marks a new phase of industrial maturity, promising job creation, technology transfer, and a more competitive landscape for Algerian car buyers.
